Preserving the Classic American Car

If you know me then you already know how I like to talk about the preservation of the classic American cars and muscle cars, I can't emphasize enough how important it is to keep these cars on the roads, so we have a presence of them around.

Isn't it enough that our country is getting inundated by imports, and the fact that people are always saying how much better other countries are building cars then we do, well without Henry Ford none of them would be building cars as we know them today, and if I remember correctly he was an American.

We need a heavy presence of American cars, just to help put way the dull drab looking imports, you know cars that have a little style and character to offer, not just these cookie cutter expensive, yet cheap built imports, how much better is a BMW, Mercedes or any other import then a good old American car.

Buy American people, all I hear is people bitching about the economy, well it seems to me that if we were to buy our own country's products, it would improve our well being, and that we would have a better economy, we would all be a lot happier, if you buy an American car from an American dealer or an individual, you have done your part to help the economy.

American Cars Back on Top

For the past few years sales of American cars have been low, owing to the consumers believe that these cars lack style, dependability, and performance. During these years the foreign car makers have taken advantage and pushed their cars into the US market. The sales of foreign cars in the US have increased dramatically and part of this is due to the lack of American car class. Last year, the sales of Chevrolet and Ford outsold Toyota in the US.

But it's time for the foreign manufacturers to watch out. American cars are back and they are coming back strong. In recent 2010 studies by J.D. Power and Associates American carmakers have earned higher scores than in imported cars in both initial quality and owner satisfaction surveys. The increases were small; but they are enough to show that American cars are becoming even with their foreign competitors.

Best American Cars of the Sixties

The sixties brought about a revolution in auto design and performance. Of course if I live long enough, I think you will see 1/4 mile 12 second electric cars that may exceed the sixties cool car boom. There are many innovative things that were tried in the 60's. The cars of the 1960's had innovation, beauty, and speed.

The early 1960's brought about the advent of the compact car. The Plymouth Valiant, Dodge Dart, Ford Falcon, Chevy Corvair (rear engine), Buick Skylark, Pontiac Tempest, Olds Cutlass, Chevy Nova, and American Motors Rambler, were some of the Auto makers attempts at a more efficient, easy to drive, less costly car. I had a 1961 Pontiac Tempest with 3 on the floor and what was actually a V8 cut in half. It was a good little bugger and candy apple red. My Aunt's Corvair took the cake with its sports car feel and rear engine. Darts and other Mopars ran forever and were so easy to maintain.

European Cars Vs American Cars

They are the most popular cars in the world. Cars that came from European and American manufacturers are setting the standard till the present day.Yet, they are very opposite in most crucial points. Most owners of European cars look at their American colleagues as somewhat backward and crude while the Americans look at the European car as a solid built go-cart.

The distance between the two schools of car making begun at the half of the 20th century. After WW2, Americans started building big cars, with massive engines that looked like they were transplanted from the truck. The rest of the technology was also in that manner. The motto was the bigger the better. This was the definition that followed American car-making philosophy to this day.

In the same time, Europeans were more refined. Economy was the name of the game, so manufacturers like Volkswagen, Renault, Citroen and others built cars with smaller engines (2000 cc was considered a big engine), relatively small bodies and made the best they could out of it. That's why most of the top engineering marvels that we use in the modern car come from European manufacturers (electric injection, ABS, common-rail technology etc.)

Most Popular Models of Used American Cars to Buy

In America, we often here the phrase "The Big Three" when talking about the auto industry. This phrase refers to the three largest domestic auto makers in the US. The leader of this group is Chevy; there are more used cars on Americas roads today that have been produced by Chevy than of the other two (Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corp.) combined. This is due to the fact that not only does Chevy produce cars under more brand plates than the other makers but they have a much longer expected life span that the other makers on the whole. The Chevy Cavalier is a very popular model among used car buyers, that is also one of the best deals that you will be able to find. This car has had a long standing record of being reliable and safe and is a great alternative to those how might be interested in buying a Ford Focus, which is a lot harder to find used.

The Ford Focus is, as mentioned, remarkably similar to the Chevy Cavalier, but is not as easy to find as a used car. This is also a car that is not as reliable as the Chevy model, but still can hold its own when being compared to other cars in the same category. The Focus has a record of being safe and economical, but is prone to breakdowns. Nevertheless the popularity of the focus remains high.

American Cars Vs Japanese Cars

There's been a great deal of excitement lately over some of the car is being produced and the American market. While some of this hoopla seems to be deserved I do think that we should look at the future of American autos with a skeptical eye. I hate to admit that a product made in America is inferior to a product made in another country, but foreign vehicles, and Japanese cars in particular, have said an industry standard for quality, reliability, and holding resale value.

American autos didn't always have a poor reputation. In the early days of the automotive industry American cars were considered reliable and the general good value. As time passed however things change in the automotive industry and the Japanese carmakers were able to enter the market and create a new standard of quality. While American cars of the notorious for poor electrical components, cheap feeling interiors, and the general lack of reliability, Japanese carmakers have been producing high quality vehicles for decades now and have garnered a reputation for reliability. Can American cars ever catch up to their Japanese counterparts? Since some Japanese car companies have recently had some reliability issues that might call into question their future competitiveness, but will American auto companies be able to capitalize on this? It's hard to say right now whether are not American car companies will be able to regain market share against the Japanese counterparts, but it's safe to say the opening has been created and it may very well be possible for the big three to take back some of the market.

Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975

The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1946-1975 is one of my favorite classic car books. I actually have two copies, one at home and at work! If you are interested in classic cars, especially American muscle cars, this is one reference manual that you need to have on your bookshelf. I work for a company that supplies specialty parts for the muscle car industry, so I have a number of muscle car books, and rarely a week goes by that I don't get this one out to look up some minuscule detail about a car from the 1960s or early 1970s.

The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1946-1975 is part of a series of automotive reference books published by Krause Books, and I own eight different books from this series. This one is my personal favorite of the series because of the time period it covers. The book separates the cars by make in alphabetical order, and then by year, making it very easy to find information on the particular car you are wanting to learn about. For instance, if you are looking for information on a 1952 Pontiac, you will find the "Pontiac" section of the book, and then you will flip to 1952, where it will list all of the models that Pontiac produced that year, with a summary of what was new and what stayed the same, plus detailed specs split out by body style on the MSRP, shipping weight, and production numbers for each style.
